First Look vs. No First Look: What’s Best for Your Wedding Day?

August 9th, 2024

Hi there, from your favorite photographer, here with some insights on "First Looks". When it comes to wedding planning, one of the most exciting—and sometimes nerve-wracking—decisions couples face is whether to have a First Look or stick to the traditional No First Look. As a wedding photographer who’s been behind the lens for countless "I do's," I’ve seen the magic of both choices firsthand. Let’s dive into the pros and cons of each, and I’ll share some real-life examples that showcase the unique beauty of each approach.

What is a First Look you ask?

A First Look is a private moment before the ceremony where the couple sees each other for the first time. It’s typically staged in a picturesque spot, away from guests, so the couple can have an intimate moment together. Here are a few Pros and Cons to consider:

Pros of a First Look:

1. Emotional Intimacy: A First Look allows for a heartfelt, personal exchange away from the crowd. You’ll get to see the genuine emotions without the pressure of a large audience.

2. Relaxed Timeline: By taking photos before the ceremony, you’ll have more time to enjoy your cocktail hour and reception, knowing that your portraits are already taken care of.

3. Creative Freedom: With the ceremony and reception often scheduled back-to-back, having a First Look frees up time for creative shots. You’ll get to explore different locations and lighting conditions without the rush. Depending on our couple's preference you can utilize this time to get bridal party shots

Cons of a First Look:

1. Surprise Factor: Some couples want to preserve the traditional "reveal" moment during the ceremony. If you opt for a First Look, you might miss out on that grand, dramatic moment when the bride walks down the aisle.

2. Extra Logistics: Coordinating the timing and location for the First Look requires careful planning. You’ll need to ensure everything is set up perfectly for those initial photos.

Real-Life Examples from My Lens

The Emotional First Look:

At a recent wedding, Alicia and Brian decided on a First Look. They opted to have the bridal party present so they can do photos with them first in order to spend more time with guest at cocktail hour. As Alicia approached Brian, his lit up with excitement and anticipation as he notices everyone around him reactions to seeing her walk down the aisle. We captured beautiful, unposed moments that were full of raw emotion. They were such a fun couple to photograph. The extra time we had after their First Look meant we could explore different locations for their photos, and they even had some extra time to relax before the ceremony.

The Dramatic No First Look:

On the flip side, Becky and Lou opted for No First Look. The moment Becky walked down the aisle in her stunning gown, the emotion on Lou’s face was priceless as she tries to hold back tears of joy. The ceremony was filled with emotion, and the reveal was a focal point of their vows. We took their portraits afterward, and despite the time crunch, we managed to get some incredible shots. The thrill of that first sighting made every minute of the post-ceremony rush worth it.
